New Dept. of Energy Regulations for HVAC Systems

high efficiency hvac systems

As of January 2023, the Department of Energy will adopt new minimum efficiency standards that affect split AC and heat pump systems. HVAC manufacturers will develop new testing for upgraded efficiency measures. At the same time, supply chain challenges stemming from the pandemic are likely to increase the prices of HVAC equipment.

That makes it more important than ever to work with the right HVAC contractor to evaluate and replace your current equipment, if needed. At DTC Air Conditioning & Heating, we are committed to guiding homeowners through the new regulations with the least disruption possible. 2023 Efficiency Changes for Heat Pumps and ACs

Under the new regulations, the minimum Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or SEER increases from 13 to 14. A new efficiency model, called “SEER2” governs increases for split ACs and heat pumps. While the changes for heat pumps are nationwide, changes for split ACs vary by region. There are three regions including the North, South, and Southwest, and Texas falls under the South region.

While the changes will require an adjustment and possible price increases, they should also bring about more energy efficiency, lowering your monthly utility bills. It’s also a smart move for the environment.

Here’s how these changes will affect heat pumps and ACs sold and installed in Texas:

  • Compliance Deadline: January 1, 2023 (All new installations must meet the new requirements. Any noncompliant equipment installed must be purchased and shipped before this deadline.)
  • Split-ACs under 45,000 Btu/h must meet a SEER2 standard of 14.3
  • Split ACs over 45,000 Btu/h must meet a SEER2 standard of 13.8
  • Residential Single Package ACs: SEER2 minimum rating of 13.4
  • Single Package Heat Pumps: SEER2 minimum rating of 13.4
