Types of Thermostats

Ready to upgrade your thermostat? Replacing your old thermostat is one of the easiest ways to reduce your HVAC energy use. That’s especially true if your current wall thermostat only has simple set-point functions (or perhaps an old-school dial or toggle switch). New thermostats have advanced technology built-in to optimize how your heating and cooling system operates. And depending on which type you choose, they can be awfully convenient. We love just calling out to Alexa to change the set-point!

Smart Thermostats

A smart thermostat (also referred to as a connected thermostat) is a device that connects to your WiFi internet. The biggest benefit of a smart thermostat is that you can access your thermostat’s setting from your smartphone or tablet. Some smart thermostats have special features, like the ability to connect with a smart home speaker system like the Amazon Echo. Some models can learn your behavior over time, like when you arrive home using a simple occupancy sensor, and adjust your temperature set-point schedule so you are most comfortable.

Programmable Thermostat

With a programmable thermostat, you can set a schedule for your HVAC system. For example, if you go to sleep every night at 10pm, you can set a programmable thermostat to change the temperature automatically at those times so you can settle into your slumber. Programmable thermostats are very effective at saving energy, but one downside is that the program doesn’t change once you set it. So, anytime we conduct an HVAC maintenance visit, we check that your thermostat’s schedules align with your current lifestyle.

Digital Thermostat

If you have ever fiddled with a standard contact thermostat, you know the benefit of a digital thermostat. Instead of a slider, toggle, or dial, you’ll see the temperature set-point displayed on a screen. There may be some buttons, like up and down, to change the set-point. If you’re looking at a digital thermostat, one feature to look for is whether the display is back-lit. It doesn’t seem important in the buying process, but it sure is a hassle to turn on the hallway lights late at night just to read your thermostat’s display. Make sure that display lights up so you can see it, even when the space is dark.

Contact Thermostat

A contact thermostat is the simplest type of thermostat you can get. This controller sends one kind of signal: on and off. You know you have a basic contact thermostat if your device only has printed numbers for temperatures and a manual control switch like a dial, slider, or toggle switch.
